HISTORY OF WARRNAMBOOL LAWN TENNIS BOWLS CLUB

Early in 1962, some of the Lawn Tennis Club players began experimenting with lawn bowls on the rarely used exhibition show court. Consequently, the inaugural meeting of the Warrnambool Lawn Tennis Bowls Club was held on July 26th 1962. It was attended by 12 men. Mr C Wines was elected president and the club applied for affiliation to both the Western District Bowls Association and Royal Victorian Bowls Association.

The ladies met in November 1962 to form the Warrnambool Lawn Tennis Ladies Bowls Club. Mrs J McConnell was elected president and Mrs Douglas secretary.

Prior to 1981, the club shared the afternoon tea facilities with the Tennis Club, but with much fundraising and voluntary labour, the bowls club members constructed an addition to the clubhouse to erect their own clubroom.

Celebrations for the Silver Jubilee were held on 31st January 1988, and fifty years in 2012-13.

A new synthetic green was opened by Dennis Napthine on April 10th 2011, proving to be a lifesaver to the club who were facing ongoing problems with the grass green.

With unification of the Men’s and Women’s bowling associations at State level, the Warrnambool Lawn Tennis Men’s and Ladies’ clubs amalgamated in 2013, with governance by a board comprised of both men and women members.
